Carolina-Piedmont Base Meeting Minutes
Meeting Date (Fall Picnic): September 23, 2023
CALL MEETING TO ORDER
- Carolina Piedmont Base Commander Rick Petitt called our meeting to order at 140 hrs.
at the Catawba Nuclear Station Park for our fall base picnic.
- The meeting followed a picnic meal brought in by our base families and the fine cooking of hamburgers, cheeseburgers and hot dogs by Rick & Cindy and assisted by Don Schob. Much thanks goes to Rick, Cindy, Don and to all the families who brought lots of great fixin’s.
INVOCATION
- Raymond Fritz gave us the invocation.
PLEDGE OF ALLEGIANCE
- All joined in saying our nation’s Pledge of Allegiance, led by Base Commander, Rick Petitt.
USSVI CREED
- The USSVI Creed was read today by Don Schob.
TOLLING OF THE BOATS
- Tolling for 5 boats lost during past September months was presented by Ray Fritz and the bell was rung by Jim Goins.
MEMBER INTRODUCTIONS
- 15 members were present at today’s picnic meeting of which some faces we hadn’t seen in a while were there so that was a special treat.
- Rick Petitt introduced his new friend Rob Pittard, a former submariner who he met at a cigar bar in Mooresville. Rob indicated he intends to become a member of our base.
AWARDS
- No awards were given out today.
REVIEW OF LAST BASE MEETING MINUTES
- September meeting minutes are posted on the base website for member’s review. No comments or corrections were received so September’s minutes stand as written.
READING OF THE TREASURER’S REPORT
- No treasures report was given today.
BASE STOREKEEPER REPORT
- No storekeeper report was given today.
- Jeff Nieberding is our contact for ordering USSVI items, including patches, vests, challenge coins, calendars, parking signs, etc.

GOOD OF THE ORDER
- No formal business nor discussion were held at today’s fall picnic … just fellowship amongst friends.
OPEN 1MC
- Rick passed along from Missy the story of a USMC veteran named Howard Lavern Harrington, Jr. who was living homeless in Manning SC who recently passed away. “Vern” as he was known in town was a kind gentleman with PTSD but was well known in his community. The Stephens Funeral Home in Manning SC agreed to do his burial, but a request went out also for donations to help pay for his funeral costs. Anyone interested can contact the Stephens Funeral Home in Manning SC at (803) 435-2179 to help reimburse the funeral home for their services to Vern.
NEXT BASE MEETING
- Our next base meeting will be held at 1400 on Saturday, October 28th at the Fort Mill SC VFW.
MOTION TO ADJOURN
- A motion to adjourn the meeting was made at 1500 hours. Motion passed.
BENEDICTION
- Today’s Benediction was given by Raymond Fritz.
